Toy Review: Marvel Legends | Bullseye

One of my favorite villains is Bullseye, namely because I love Daredevil. This review is of the Toy Biz Marvel Legends Galactus Series Bullseye. I don’t have very many of the old Toy Biz figures from the early 2000’s, but when I saw this figure on Ebay, I had to have him. If I’m being honest, I love this figure. I would love it even if the articulation was horrible, which it’s not. Ok, let’s take a closer look.

Articulation – ★★★★☆

Bullseye is loaded with articulation and it is awesome. There is one issue, however, I’m not sure if it’s the type of plastic used back then, or the paint, but you need to be really careful as you move these joints. They can get stuck over time and if you force it, you’ll break the figure. Use hot water or a hair dryer to loosen these joints before you start moving them around if you have to. Let’s take a look.

• Arms – There are 12 joints per arm.
  • Shoulders: There’s a lot going on in the shoulders. There’s a Ball Joint with a Peg Joint as well as a butterfly joint. All of these joints are very well done, though the butterfly joint provides mostly backward motion instead of forward. It would have been great to get a little more forward out of it. The arms can raise above the shoulders, and there is good rotation of the arms.
  • Bicep: Peg Joint with full range of motion. The joint will open up a good sized gap depending on how you have the arm positioned, but it doesn’t drastically affect the look.
  • Elbow: Double Pin/Hinge joints provide good bend of the elbows. The positioning of the hinges does prevent the arm from a full bend, but it’s still quite good.
  • Forearm: Peg Joint just below the elbow joint. This is a strangely placed joint. I wish it were right in the wrist like the newer figures have, but it is sufficient. The cut joint does create a bit of a lip of extra plastic depending on the positioning.
  • Wrist: Pin/Hinge joint provides decent range of motion, though the newer style of wrist joints is a big upgrade to this style. I wish there were a peg joint here as well. The forearm joint just doesn’t cut it.
  • Hand: Each finger is individually articulated via a pin/hinge joint. It’s great to have so much articulation, but the shape of the fingers does make positioning the fingers a little difficult. Since the fingers are mostly straight, you cannot put his hands into a fist as it just looks really weird. The joints themselves are nice and tight, though.
• Legs – There are 8 joints in each leg/hip/ankle area.
  • Hips: Y-Jointed Ball Joint along with the Pin/Hinge joint in the ball of the hip joint provides a good amount of backward and forward kick motion. Bullseye also has good outward motion. The peg joints are a little loose and the Pin/Hinge joints are overly tight and need a lot of careful coaxing to activate so be careful with these joints.
  • Thigh: Peg Joint right from the hip ball. This is a bit of a redundant joint as the upper hip joint does the same thing.
  • Knees: Double Pin/Hinge joints in the knees allows for a really good bend in the knee.
  • Shin: I can’t tell if this is an articulation point or not. There is a joint here but if it’s supposed to move mine are both locked and I don’t want to force it into moving since shin joints are usually useless anyway.
  • Ankles: Each ankle has 2 joints. Pin/Hinge Joints that allow for really good backward and forward motion. The ankle rocker is a little different than the newer Hasbro ankle rockers. This one seems to be a Pin/Hinge joint which is sufficient, though the newer style does provide for a little more motion, but this style provides a straighter articulation.
  • Foot: There is a toe hinge on each foot. I’m on the fence whether this articulation is really even useful. This Pin/Hinge joint provides a small amount of motion and is a little loose on my figure.
• Body – There are 2 joint in the body area.
  • Torso: Pin/Hinge Joint in the torso provides a really good ab crunch as well as a really nice back arch.
  • Waist: Peg Joint provides a standard waist swivel. This joint is well hidden by the belt so the typical cut joint oddities created by a joint like this are quite unnoticeable.
• Head: A single Ball Joint and a Pin/Hinge disc that provides good up and down and side-to-side motion but the tilt is almost nothing.

Mold – ★★★★★

I love this figure. Next to my Daredevil figure, this is probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite figure. The sculpt on this figure is just amazing. Everything about this figure is awesome. There are some problems, though they are very minor. The ankle joints are a little oversized, creating a strange look to the ankles. I already noted the shape of the fingers and how you cannot make a natural looking fist. Beyond that, there isn’t a lot to complain about in my book.

The face sculpt is probably the highlight of this figure. Toy Biz really nailed this figure. They got the likeness of the comics perfectly in this figure. He looks like he just fell off the page of a Daredevil comic. Even the body sculpt really matches the look of the character. There’s a ton of detail in this figure from the belt and pouches to the stitches throughout the costume of the figure. They even sculpted the bullseye in his forehead, which they could have easily just painted it on and called it good.

Overall I think the sculpt deserves 5 stars.

Paint – ★★★★☆

There isn’t a ton of paint on this figure, and there really doesn’t need to be. I really like the way they applied the white over the top of the black, letting some of the black show through. Normally this just looks like a crappy paint app. The black is bleeding through and for this application, it really works well. It gives the figure a nice look. The paint app isn’t so much about the detail work or even cleanliness of the lines, though they did a sufficient job throughout the figure. It’s just the overall simplicity that works. The face, however, is extraordinarily clean and well painted. The detail of the face is amazing. I really just enjoy looking at this figure as he’s so well done.

Over the years, even in the packaging this figure has aged, and the paint quality is starting to show. The paint on the hinge joints is quickly flaking off. Luckily, the majority of these joints that are painted white and losing their paint were also cast in white plastic, so it’s not such a big deal.

Finally, you can see some hints of a dark blue throughout portions of the figure. This gives the figure some much needed depth and detail that an all black outfit just wouldn’t have provided. At times, the blue application seems a bit too limited. Most of the blue is saved for the larger portions of the torso, so there is no blue on the arms. Since the blue is for the most part pretty minimal, you don’t notice it much until you look real close, but when you do, it makes it seem as though the arms and legs don’t entirely fit into the body as there is not blue on the arms or legs. Not a big deal, but certainly could have made the figure a little better.

Accessories – ★★★☆☆

Bullseye comes with no accessories, but he does come with a comic book which I have yet to read. I wish he would have come with some playing cards, that would have been pretty cool.

Packaging – ★★☆☆☆

The Toy Biz line came in blister packaging which I absolutely hate. It looks nice, but you’re required to essentially destroy the packaging just to get to the toy which I cannot stand.

Overall Rating – ★★★★☆

Overall this figure is amazing. Don’t let the 4 stars sway you into thinking this is a run of the mill figure. Bullseye lost stars for superficial reasons in packaging and accessories. This is a must have figure and he’s still pretty affordable to buy on Ebay which is where I got him. Go get this figure, you will not be disappointed.
