Weight Loss Ultimatum – Day 13 | Weigh In

It’s day 13 and my second weigh in of this Weight Loss Ultimatum challenge. I should back up a bit, first and talk about how I did over the weekend.

Not very good! Yeah, I didn’t follow any of my plans for the weekend. I ate way too much, way too often. Anyway, I had a great weekend even with the poor eating.

Obviously this must have negatively affected my weigh in, but still I managed to have a successful week. It could have been better I bet, but I’m satisfied with what I got. Let’s get on with it and see.

Starting Weight = 210.0 lbs

Current Weight = 207.8 lbs

Weight Loss This Week = 2.2 lbs

Total Overall Weight Loss = 3.6 lbs

Hey, that’s not too bad. Just over 2 lbs in a week is very satisfying. Let’s make this week just as successful.

Have a great week everyone!

Weight Loss Ultimatum – Day 6 | First Weigh In

The weekend didn’t go super well. I was feeling under the weather for the majority of it so that apparently means I don’t need to track what I eat. I wouldn’t say I ate horribly, and I’ll just leave it there.

I’ve decided to make Monday mornings my official weigh in day. This way I’m more likely to eat better over the weekend (except this one I guess) and I’m more likely to write a post about it.

Without further ado, let’s see how we did.

Starting Weight = 211.4 lbs

Current Weight = 210.0 lbs

Weight Loss This Week = 1.4 lbs

I’m actually pretty happy with that number. It’s not amazing, but it’s success. Especially considering the weekend I had. I’m back on track this morning with a nice breakfast of yogurt and a granola bar and my lunch is pretty close to the same. I don’t plan on doing yogurt twice a day normally, but I was in such a hurry this morning it’s what I was able to grab.

How was your weekend? Did you stay on track or were you like me? When you fall off the wagon, what do you do to get back on?

Have a great day everyone!

Weight Loss Challenge – Day 230 | DONE

I was originally planning on posting this yesterday, but time got away from me, so I’m posting today. On the bright side, the math adds up that (if you consider counting math) today is the 230th day of the challenge which makes this a good round number to end on.

Here’s the deal, I am putting an end to the Weight Loss Challenge. It has been 230 days since I started it and I’ve lost a lot of weight. Let’s take a look at the final results.

Starting Weight = 221.4 lbs

Ending Weight = 174.8 lbs

Total Weight Loss = 46.6 lbs

Overall, this was a great experience. Obviously since I managed to lose 46 lbs. I learned a lot and made a lot of changes in my life. It has become quite obvious to me, however, that I am ready to move on to something different. Today I will be starting a new challenge which you can read about here.

Thank you to everyone who has read my blog along the way and supported me. I hope those of you who have been reading my blog have not been too bored by my writing style (if you can really say I have a style). I’ve found a lot of really cool blogs that I try to follow daily or at least weekly.

Weight Loss Challenge – Day 223 | Have I Met My Match

It’s been 11 days since I last posted for the challenge. A lot has happened since the last post, and most of it, hasn’t been awesome. Here’s the run down of excuses. 🙂

  • My wife has fibromyalgia and has had a really bad case of it for the last 2 weeks. When this happens, it’s like I become a single dad. And not one of those Daddy Daycare kind of single dads. I’m talking the frazzled, just trying to keep my head above water kind. It’s not that I can’t handle my kids. It’s not that I can’t handle my work. But handling both at the same time, as well as being stressed about your wife maybe needing to go into the ER (we’ve thought for a while she had kidney stones), that starts getting to you.
  • Add to the first bullet, we’ve been having server issues at work. I’m on a team of two who manage SharePoint for a decent size hospital. We probably have 15k-30k users online each day in our environment, so it’s not small. We have locations on the East Coast, West Coast, and the Midwest. That means, in order to work on the system, we have to schedule it after hours for all of our locations. That means I don’t get to start my work until about 8:00pm my time (CST). I said we are a team of 2, but I’m technically the only “technical” person on the team, so that means I’m it. Yippee! Anyway, after several nights working till 3am, we’re at least at a point where I’m pretty confident we can fix the problem. The good thing is, the problem never really has caused an outage, but the work I have to do to fix it does.
  • I’ve been sick the last 1 1/2 weeks or so. Not great when you’re relied upon for so much. Yeah yeah, I know there are plenty of people out there that have it worse than me, remember, this is a list of excuses, not valid reasons for my not keep up with my challenge. ;-). Anyway, it always seems that when my wife has a flare up as we call them, I wind up getting sick around that time too. I don’t remember the last time I got to just “be sick” and be taken care of.
  • Finally, it’s the end of the school year. That means, my two school age daughters have events during the day, that need to be attended. That’s right, so now I need to figure out which events I can and can’t go to. Yup, track and field, was a no go this year. Luckily, it rained so I dodged that one (the kids weren’t so lucky).

Ok, now that you’ve seen all my excuses, let’s just take a look at how bad I’ve done. In reality, it’s not so bad. I’d say I’ve done pretty darn well, considering.

Weight Loss this week: +1.2 lbs

Total Weight Loss: 46.2 lbs

Not too bad, considering. The eating right, or at least eating better, has been pretty easy, though I will admit, I’ve been sneaking little bits here and there a lot more often. Those little sneaks usually don’t get recorded very accurately. In the end though, I’d say, I’ve been in a relatively solid “maintenance” pattern. The problem is I didn’t want to be in a maintenance pattern just yet.

After the last 2 weeks, I’ve really been wondering if I should just be done with this challenge. Getting down to 170 lbs really isn’t a need, it’s more of a want. I do want to start up the new challenge soon, though I honestly haven’t put any thought into that yet either. At this point, I’m not even going to the gym. I’m so tired all the time.

I’ll keep posting, and I’ll keep eating better. We’ll just have to see what happens from here.

Have a great week everyone.

Weight Loss Challenge – Day 209 | I’m just so tired

Last week was a pretty pitiful week in terms of my workouts. If I were to count my workouts, it was a total of 3 times I made it to the gym, but of those 3 times, I managed to hit the hot tub and only the hot tub all 3 times. Yeah, zero workouts last week. I’m going to chalk it up to being the first week back after the Microsoft Ignite conference, but I don’t know if that’s all it was.

Anyway, it was weigh in day yesterday, let’s get to it.

Weight Loss this week: 3.8 lbs

Total Weight Loss: 47.2 lbs

That’s a little better. I gained some weight while I was gone, but after last week, I think I should be able to get back to where I left off in about a week or so. That being said, I don’t know if I can legitimately make the 170lbs mark by the end of this extra 30 days I gave myself, since that would have been, well… tomorrow. I think I need to add another 30 days to my challenge so I can get there. No biggie. Yes, I failed, but I didn’t fail by completely giving up. I failed because I dropped the ball for a week and that set me back about 2 weeks. That’s the 4 lbs I now needs. No worries though.

I started this week off, ok. I did a really short workout, but I actually worked out, which is 100% better than last week and it’s only Monday. My calorie intake is on track so I don’t need to worry about that one. Granted, last week I ate quite well also, but I suppose that’s why I lost 3.8 lbs of the nearly 5 lbs I gained while gone.

The most difficult struggle I’m having is my energy levels. I got very little sleep while I was away and I think that is still haunting me. I have zero energy to workout. I’m just lucky I’m back to my diet otherwise, fat city here I come again.

I don’t mean to be negative, I’ve got a lot to be satisfied about and a lot to look forward to. I’m on track to get to 170 lbs very soon, so I may not need the additional 30 days. Let’s see how soon I can get there.

Have a great week everybody.

Weight Loss Challenge – Day 202 | That Sounds About Right

I’m back. Microsoft Ignite is over and now I need to pick up the pieces of my food choices. I started the week off relatively well. I planned to eat no more than 2,500 calories per day, which I came pretty close to the first 2 days. Then things went downhill. In the end, I don’t regret it. I don’t even feel that bad. Here’s the results of a week in which there was free food, drink and everything else.

Weight Loss this week: -4.8 lbs

Total Weight Loss: 43.4 lbs

I’ll admin, that doesn’t look too good. In the end, though, this isn’t that big of a deal. Here’s why. I don’t really believe I gained an actual 4.8 lbs. We all know it takes a little time for… um… your food to pass through your body. I’ll have a much more accurate picture of the damage I did this Sunday when I do my weigh in.

Today I am back on the 1,800 calories per day. I’ve already begun with my standard yogurt and granola breakfast. I’m hoping that being back on the controlled diet will help the way I feel. Eating whatever I wanted was starting to make me feel disgusting. Hopefully this will get me back to a better feeling.

Don’t worry about me folks. I may have had a seemingly large setback, but I’m back on track today. I may need to extend my challenge again so I can actually get down below 170 lbs, but that’s ok.

Have a great day everyone!

Weight Loss Challenge – Day 194 I So it begins

Weigh in day was yesterday. Let’s see how I did.

Weight Loss this week: 1.6 lbs

Total Weight Loss: 48.2 lbs

Hey that’s pretty darn good. Let’s just hope I don’t ruin it this week.

I’m in Chicago now and on day 1 I managed to eat just 2,600 calories. Not too bad for day one. Granted, I had a very light lunch and breakfast before leaving town. The real test is today, and tomorrow and the next day, etc.

My goal is to get up real early everyday to workout. That way I’ve started the day well. Hopefully i can actually drag myself out of bed to do it.

For now, that’s all I’ve got. If anything interesting happens I’ll post it here.

I almost forgot to mention, I’ll have an easy time burning calories if my team lets me navigate us around. I took us about 1 mile the wrong direction looking for our hotel. I could have swore that GPS was right when we started and then Chicago just flipped while we were walking.

Weight Loss Challenge – Day 187 | Yeah, that’s not happening!

Sunday was weigh in day for me and considering I hadn’t worked out one bit the entire week, I was expecting a bit of an increase in weight. I did pretty well with my eating, but I noticed was starting to sneak little micro snacks while getting meals prepared. My micro snacking has been going on for a little while now. It consists of me giving the baby or kids their meals and while I prepare them, I grab a couple pieces for myself without documenting it. Essentially a 2 for you 1 for me deal. Needless to say, that’s not really a good plan for losing weight, so I’ve decided to finally increase my daily calorie intake from 1,600 to 1,800. I think I said I was going increase a while ago but never did. I finally have made the change. It feels great.

Even better was my weigh in went very well. No weight lost, but also no weight gained (.2 lbs is nothing in my book).

Weight Loss this week: -0.2 lbs

Total Weight Loss: 45 lbs

This week I plan on working out, but I’ve decided half of my workout is going to be dedicated to stretching. Over the last 1-2 years, I’ve reduced my stretching considerably, and I know that it has contributed to my foot issues, and quite possibly my back problems. I still plan on getting an appointment with my sports medicine folks, but while I wait, I plan on doing something about this on my own too. So, today was my first day of stretching. It felt great, and by, it felt great, I mean, it hurt a lot, because I’m very inflexible. Let’s hope a week of this will start loosening these ever so tight muscles.

Have a great day everyone.

Weight Loss Challenge – Day 180 | The Grand Finale!

It has been 180 days since the Weight Loss Challenge – Day 1 began on October 22nd, 2014. A lot has happened in 180 days. Here’s what my original goal was.

My goal is to lose 30 pounds within 6 months from now. That means by April, I should have lost my weight.

~Me (180 days ago)

The biggest question is, did I make my goal? Let’s have a look and see.

Starting Weight = 221.4 lbs

Weight Today = 174.6 lbs

Total Weight Loss = 46.8 lbs

As you can see I met my goal, by a lot. I actually met my goal 90 days ago Weight Loss Challenge – Day 90 | 190 @ 90. I was pretty excited then, but I knew I wasn’t going to double my weight loss and be down 60 lbs by 180 days. That wasn’t the goal. What was my modified goal at 90 days you ask?

In the next 90 days, my goal is to lose another 15 lbs. I’d like to get to my “Wedding Day” weight. Not sure why I put that in quotation marks. It really is what I weighed on my wedding day.

~Me (90 days ago)

What do you know… I made that goal too. That one was a little closer call. There were some pretty shady weeks recently and I definitely appreciate all the support from my WordPress friends.

Before and After

Left to Right. Day 1, Day 90, Day 180

Before and After Left to Right. Day 1 Day 90 Day 180

I’ve lost a bunch of weight. I’m looking and feeling great (well, maybe not great, but better at least). Now what do I do? Where do I go from here? I’ve been thinking about this for quite some time now. Here are the three options I’m toying with.

  • Extend the Weight Loss Challenge to get to 165 lbs
  • Start a Weight Maintenance Challenge for 180 days
  • Start a No Pain, No Gain Weight Lifting Body Transformation Challenge

That last one probably needs some explanation. I really enjoy lifting weights. I’ve incorporated a little bit in my workouts lately and I’m really liking how my body has been responding. I’ve always wanted to see if I could get a six pack or at least not a single barrel would be nice. So the No Pain, No Gain is really referring to a change in my lifting so the focus is truly on getting ripped. I don’t ever really want to be so ripped like say The Terminator, but it would be interesting to see just how much muscle definition I could achieve. This doesn’t mean, however, that cardio is thrown out. It would just mean that I would do a more well rounded weight lifting routine (full body) with the goal of increasing the weight lifted, as well as doing body measurements to determine progress.

Anyway, those are the 3 main ideas I’ve got right now, but I can’t just leave you guys out of this. What are your thoughts? I’ve already gotten some feedback on ideas going forward, but I don’t mind getting the same ideas again. Tomorrow, I’ll announce my plan, so get your opinions in now, before it’s too late and I do something stupid.

Stay tuned for parts 2 and 3 of my Weight Loss Challenge Finale. Or don’t, it’s ok, I understand, you’re busy. No worries.

Weight Loss Challenge – Day 174 | Table That

There’s 6 days until the end of the 180 day Weight Loss Challenge. Yesterday was the 2nd to last weigh in. Let’s see how I did last week.

Weight Loss this week: 2.0 lbs

Total Weight Loss: 45.2 lbs

Look at that! I’m back on track, losing 2 lbs in a week is huge, especially so close to the end. I was really starting to think that I was done being able to lose weight for some reason. I found that spark again. Some of it is simply the sprint to the finish now.

This weekend went really well. I ate within my limits both Friday and Saturday, and Sunday I managed to stay around 2,500 calories with a short 30 minute elliptical workout. I figured 2,500 calories was pretty darn good.

Weekend Project

I had a very busy day Sunday. I finally got to a project I’ve been wanting to complete for nearly a year. I didn’t finish it, but I got a critical part of it done. I’m working to build a rain barrel system for our garden. I had to build a platform for the barrels to sit on, so I can then assemble the plumbing underneath. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on this, so I had gotten 2 old pallets from my neighbor last fall and figured I could retrofit them to be my platform. Needless to say, this thing needs to be able to hold in excess of 1,000 lbs if both barrels are full of water, so I’m hoping I’ve created a strong enough structure. The original design called for just four posts, but since I’m not putting this on a concrete slab, I needed something to spread the weight. That’s why I chose pallets. I figured the pallets would spread the load evenly (hopefully). All I have left now is the plumbing. Then we can start collecting rainwater and come mothers day, water our garden, should I get everything done in time and get the planting done as well. Here’s a look at the table below.

Have a great week everybody. I’ve got one week left. I’m not going to make 170 lbs lost (need 6.2 lbs for that) but perhaps I can make it to 175 by Sunday. Keep up the good work everyone.
